A Cool Time in Hot Austin

Rick Noriega @ UDems Meeting at UT. Dan Grant in foreground left.

After the Labor Day weekend adventure in Pasadena, the engelhart4judge.com 2008 green hybrid coasted silently in electric-only mode to the capital of Texas, Lubbock. Just kidding, I know it's San Antonio Austin.

I was there for a 3 day seminar on Civil Appellate law. A lot of interesting stuff, but only to us law nerds. Anyone else would have thrown themselves into Town Lake out of boredom.

On Wednesday night, after a day of "Appellate Boot Camp", I headed over to the University of Texas campus (Mezes Hall) for the UDems first meeting of the year. There were over 200 students at what is obviously the best political organization on campus. Rick Noriega wowed the crowd, and there were many other candidates and officeholders there. Larry Joe Doherty and Dan Grant were there, vying for the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressional District to take on weak-sister incumbent Michael McCaul. Glen Maxey, an Austin political stalwart and candidate was there, as were several Travis County constable and judicial candidates.

I got to speak for a moment, and got cheers from over 1/3 of the room when I asked who was from Harris County. I am really excited about the chance to have some of these great activists working on my campaign and the Harris County Democratic Judicial campaigns next summer.

It was a packed house, with no a/c, so I was glistening a bit, but it was loud and boisterous and felt like a union hall. The energy was contagious. Then we all marched over to Players for a late dinner. I got a vanilla milkshake and talked shop with Grant and Noriega, while we continued to talk with the students.

I got a nice e-mail from Ben Trotter, the new UDems President, thanking me for coming and inviting me back. I am really looking forward to that. He and Laura Hernandez, VP, ran a great meeting.

On Thursday, while I was still in Austin, my law partner, Kelly Greenwood, attended the Harris County Democratic Lawyers' Assoc. luncheon at the Brownstone. She spoke on my behalf for a moment, and met several people who said they were supportive of our campaign. That same night, my manager, Jaye Sutter, attended the successful SD6 Petition signing party. My beautiful wife, Eva attended the Mikal Watts event hosted at the home of Paul and Susan Danziger. Thank you very much to all three for their great help.
