The Latest - Monthly Wrap Up - May 2007

Well, as some of you probably guessed, the engelhart4judge.com 2008 crew didn't get to campaign outside on Memorial Day as the heavens seems to have parted and flooded out the City of Houston's Memorial Day celebration. We were very disappointed, and almost drowned the campaign's hybrid Toyota on the way home from Veterans Memorial Park for our troubles. When we arrived at the park, they were taking down the tents and the parking lot was nearly empty. The hands were left unshaken, the babies unkissed.

We are still unsure as to which Harris County Civil District Court bench we will be running for, but hope to have that information very soon as the first day of fundraising, June 6, 2007 (next Wednesday) is rapidly approaching. Have no fear, though, as the campaign is busily speaking with groups about hosting fundraisers, and helping with the campaign. When we have the bench, there will be quite a splash, we promise.

This morning the campaign pulled into La Colombe D'or, a fancy Montrose catering hall, most recently known to us as the annual spot of the Richard Mithoff Christmas Party. There we got to schmooze with political heavyweights, including (in no particular order), Chris Bell, Alison Bell, Gordon Quan, and his lovely wife, Sylvia, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, former Gov. Mark White, Sheila Jackson Lee, Sylvia Garcia, Annise Parker, Ellen Cohen, Nick Lampson, Houston City Council candidate James Rodriguez, Dave Matthiesen (mediator and head of a HCDP task force) and some judicial candidate named Mike Engelhart

We spoke with every one of them and they all referred to your favorite candidate as "Judge". Probably because they forgot his name. Nevertheless, it was an intimate event and very worthwhile. When we arrived, Chris Bell had just gotten up to start to speak to the group and asked us to close the door to the room behind us. He called yours truly "Mike", which was encouraging. Nonetheless, we could not comply because coming in behind us was Sheila Jackson Lee, and we were not about to try to close the door on her. We spoke with Congresswoman Lee for about 30 seconds in the end as she was walking out. We mentioned that we were thinking about using the Shirley Chisholm slogan from her 1972 presidential campaign: "Unbought and Unbossed" as our slogan, and did she think that was appropriate. She said that we had better know what it's about before we start using it, but that it would be very powerful in certain parts of our community.

Tonight, the engelhart4judge.com 2008 hybrid heads over to the Katy Area New Democrats meeting to speak with that terrific group of hard working activists. Really looking forward to that.
