Caribbean Festival Campaigning (updated)

Flags of the Caribbean

Some experiences are too much fun to keep to myself -- not that I do that a lot anyway. Last Sunday afternoon the engelhart4judge.com 2008 green hybrid coasted to Tom Bass Park in southern Harris County for the 2007 Caribbean Festival. It was a fantastic party. It was hot on that blacktop, but the crowd was terrific. I must have shaken hands with about 350-400 attendees and handed out cards and buttons. I also handed out voter registration cards, and people were really anxious to get them. There is tremendous enthusiasm for a Democratic takeover of Harris County in 2008 that I have seen just about everywhere I've been campaigning.

More on July 4th

I loved the 4th of July parade in Kingwood. I met so many nice people and shook about a zillion hands. Almost everyone was friendly and supportive and wished me well. I was so impressed with the crowds and their encouragement on a cold and rainy day, that I wrote a letter to the editor of the Kingwood Observer. Here is the published letter. It's the second one down.

UPDATE:

Stace Medellin's Dos Centavos blog has a short piece about my Kingwood Observer letter today.

Speaking of free media, I was interviewed on the Texas Kaos podcast. You can listen to that interview HERE. And not free media . . . We've started running our paid ads in the "Our Texas" Russian paper, since Eva speaks Russian and we have a lot of friends in the large local Russian community. It's free, and you can pick it up at the Russian General Store at Hillcroft and S. Braeswood if you don't have anything else to do. That's a great store. Great breads, produce and desserts. Finally, I was interviewed at length by the Texas Lawyer weekly legal newspaper about the Harris County judicial races by reporter Mark Donald. I am looking forward to reading that story that comes out next Monday. He asked me to e-mail a picture, so I am hopeful our campaign will be discussed at length in the story.

Stickers and Signs

We now have our big signs and bumper stickers. We've put two large (8' x 4') signs up on the two fences around my law office at McGowen & Caroline in midtown Houston. They look great and really catch the eye. And, we got our bumper stickers back from the printer. I have been handing them out, and have them on our cars already. Come by my office at 1300 McGowen to get yours, or e-mail me and we'll get one to you.

People have been asking for magnets like Ellen Cohen had, but those are really pricey. If someone wants to donate about $2000 I can get 1000 of those and you'll get first dibs.

Birthday

Friday the 13th is my 37th birthday. Eva and I have a date and a babysitter. Now that's a treat. As much as the sun rises and sets with my boys, every parent knows that nights out alone with your spouse are special.

By the way, feel free to make a contribution to celebrate my birthday so you don't have to worry about size or whether I already have one.

Office Space

No, not Mike Judge's cult classic. We will be opening our first campaign office at 4151 Southwest Freeway, just inside the loop, next week. I am awaiting the lease to sign. It's a nice office with space for a war room, an office, and other workspace. Plenty of parking, too. It will allow us to focus our energies on organizing our plan of attack, working on maps and lists for fundraising, mailings, and block walking. Call or come by -- I'll post our cell phone numbers and the suite number soon -- if you have some time to help. I am sure we can put you to work. Some say this is "just" a judicial campaign. I say, there are no small campaigns, only small vote totals. Remember, Harris County has more voters than many states (Montana, I am looking at you . . . ).
