Houston, Texas - December 28, 2007 - Democrat Mike Engelhart filed his application to be on the March 4, 2008 primary ballot as a candidate for the 151st Civil District Court of Harris County, Texas. He submitted 156 ballot petition pages with a total of over 1040 signatures, far more than the 750 signature minimum. Mike is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Houston Law Center where he was an associate editor of the Houston Law Review. Mike has been a partner in a Houston civil litigation firm for over a decade, and has represented approximately 1000 different clients in many facets of the law. He practices in a stand-alone Midtown office building that he and his law partner bought in 2004. He has tried 25 cases and handled 18 appeals, including several in the Texas Supreme Court. He has been involved in matters as varied as divorces, bankruptcies, consumer fraud, auto accidents, health care liability claims, real estate, contracts, employment disputes, mass torts and civil rights. He is admitted to practice in all of the state and federal courts of Texas, as well as the federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Mike's experience with myriad types of clients and cases makes him especially WELL QUALIFIED to take over the complex and varied litigation docket of the civil district courts. Mike's likely Republican opponent, in contrast, seems to have handled only one type of case, and tried only 2 cases prior to seeking the bench according to the Houston Press. She is not admitted to practice in any federal court according to the State Bar website. Mike's experience will allow him to implement changes in the 151st District Court from day one. Mike will read every filing, be prepared to make prompt rulings at hearings, and hold regular status conferences to make sure that attorneys are prepared for trial at their first trial setting. He intends to streamline jury service, and modernize courtroom communications and interaction with lawyers and jurors to save time and money for taxpayers. Mike intends to return the system to one that adheres to the Constitutional principles of the right to a jury trial. In addition, Mike intends to reinstate the primacy of due process in our courts and restore their forfeited credibility. |
